Between the 14th and 21st, the event takes place at the Euclides da Cunha Municipal Library and outdoors in the Santa Tereza, Pedreirinha and Amarante neighborhoods.

The Chica Pelega Film Festival – The Contestado in Focus arrives in Videira between October 14 and 21, 2024, bringing a special, free programme for all ages. In addition to the screenings at the Euclides da Cunha Municipal Library, the event will also hold outdoor sessions in city neighborhoods, such as Santa Tereza, Pedreirinha, Vila Verde and Amarante. These sessions will be set up with an inflatable screen and appropriate structure to provide a unique cinematic experience in open spaces, bringing cinema closer to the communities.

During the mornings and afternoons, the festival will serve municipal and state schools, offering an educational opportunity for students of various ages to get in touch with the region’s rich history. In the evenings, the general public will be able to enjoy feature films, with one film screened each day, followed by debates that promise to deepen knowledge about the theme of the Contestado War and Caboclo culture.

Among the films screened are two works by the renowned Santa Catarina filmmaker Sylvio Back, including Guerra dos Pelados (1970), a historical fiction that addresses the Contestado backlands revolt, with Stênio Garcia in the cast. Also part of the programme is the trilogy directed by Márcia Paraíso, of Plural Filmes, which includes the documentaries Terra Cabocla, A Maravilha do Século and Luta da Erva, the latter focused on the history of yerba mate and its relevance to the region. The trilogy addresses the consequences of the Contestado conflict, revealing the depth of the social transformations that occurred even a century after the end of the war.

In each evening session, there will be debates with specialists and members of the Contestado Movement. It will be a moment of conversation about the films, bringing discussion and curiosities about Caboclo culture in the region. The discussion circles will be moderated by local figures such as Elias de Lima, an Afro-Indigenous caboclo and cultural producer, and Diego Ahmod, an actor and researcher of Caboclo history, both residents of Caçador. Alzira Scapin, journalist and author of 10 books on the Contestado, will also participate as a moderator, sharing her decades of research on the conflict.

The programme also features the moderators Eliane do Prado, teacher and researcher from Lebon Régis, and Edson Camargo, state leader of the traditional quilombo communities. The screenings, both at the library and outdoors, are open to the entire population free of charge and promise moments of reflection and learning. The project is carried out with funds from the Paulo Gustavo Law, through the Videira Department of Tourism and Culture and the Videira City Hall.
