Known as São João Maria, Monk, or Prophet João Maria in southern Brazil, the Italian Giovanni Maria de Agostini arrived in the Americas in the late 19th century and crossed the continent on foot or by canoe, calling himself a solitary hermit. He lived in caves and hard-to-reach places, and in many of the places he passed through he left a legacy of faith, spread knowledge about herbs, and taught a simple religiosity, far removed from the dogmas of the Church. “A Maravilha do Século” is a search for that trajectory — part the paths he trod, part the testimonies of faith that remain alive more than 150 years after his death.
