On Saturday afternoon (05/20/23) in the Invernada dos Negros Remaining Quilombo Community, Campos Novos/SC, the first day of the free film workshop “O minuto que foi” took place with filmmaker Yasser Socarrás González. The workshop is a counterpart action of the Chica Pelega Film Festival – quilombola edition – Elisabete Anderle Award 2022.

Those taking part in the workshop secured their spots throughout May, which was when the enrollment announcements were made through local WhatsApp groups and also social media.

An audiovisual maker, teacher and researcher, Yasser graduated from the Higher Institute of Art (Cuba) and holds a Master’s in Social Anthropology from UFSC (Brazil) with the research Je est un autre: the construction of Black invisibility in Cuban cinema produced by ICAIC. He is also a member of the Center for the Study of Identities and Interethnic Relations – NUER / UFSC. He currently works as a producer, screenwriter and director at Filmes de Apartamento, of which he is a founding partner.

About the first stage of the workshop, Yasser says the intention is to “draw out the longings and desires of the things they want to tell and the things they want people to know about them.” The participants were split into two teams to build texts and ideas so that each team could produce a film.

For Lorene, one of the workshop participants, the first day was full of new experiences since she had never taken part in a film workshop. And about this first stage she says: “We discussed the film project… We want it to represent our struggle and our dreams.”

Next Saturday there’s more! So, are you excited f
