Betânia portrays the story of a 65-year-old woman who gives the film its name. The matriarch of a large family, she works as a midwife. After her husband’s death, her daughters convince her to return to the village where she was born and where the rest of the family still lives, on the edge of the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Moved by the ancestral sound of Bumba Meu Boi and by the strength of the community, Betânia tries to rebuild her life and be reborn, leaving behind a simple, agrarian life and finding a sense of belonging in this place marked by the blend of modernity and tradition. Amid this new reality, she faces the challenges and comforts of a life with internet and electricity — a change that also sets her on the path of a personal transformation.
