Before any screening, the 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival — quilombola edition began inside the communities. In May 2023, Cuban filmmaker Yasser Socarrás González led the audiovisual creation workshop “O minuto que foi” over two weekends: in Invernada dos Negros (the community pavilion, in Campos Novos) on May 20 and 27, and in Campo dos Poli (APAFEC headquarters, in Fraiburgo) on May 21 and 28. The premise was simple and powerful: that the quilombo communities themselves would tell their own stories in just a few minutes.
The communities
Invernada dos Negros, between Campos Novos and Abdon Batista, was the first quilombola community in Santa Catarina to receive certification as a remaining quilombo, on April 2, 2004, from the Palmares Cultural Foundation — and the first quilombola territory recognized by Incra in the state. Campo dos Poli, on the border between Monte Carlo and Fraiburgo, was certified in 2007; its residents, linked to the Apolinário family, were expelled from the territory around the 1940s–50s and, despite being recognized, still lack land titling. It is from this memory of resistance that the workshop set out.
The films born there
The workshop produced three shorts, made by members of the communities and gathered in the curatorial axis Fazer quilombola: A luta de um quilombola polinário, Nos batuques dos tambores: o sonho de muitos and Luta e resistência – Invernada dos negros. They traveled through the entire edition — from the July 2023 festival to the 2024 circuits across western and coastal Santa Catarina.
Who led it
Yasser Socarrás González is an audiovisual filmmaker, teacher and researcher. A graduate of Cuba’s Higher Institute of Art, he dedicates himself to cinema as a tool for education and for listening to communities — a method that guided every minute of “O minuto que foi”.
