Chica Pelega Film Festival wraps up its third edition with an audience of nearly 1,000 people

Held throughout July and dedicated to quilombola culture, the Festival had online and in-person screenings in four cities in Santa Catarina

The 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival – quilombola edition presented 28 films highlighting the culture and identity of the remaining quilombola communities of Santa Catarina and of the country. With a completely free programme, it consisted of online sessions from July 1 to 31 on the website https://chicapelega.com.br and in-person screenings over seven days in Fraiburgo, Capinzal, Monte Carlo and Campos Novos, in seven schools and other spaces. In all, the sessions and other activities directly reached 940 people.  

The programme presented feature and short films of fiction and documentary, divided into the curatorial axes Resistência SC, Quilombos no plural, Visões do mundo ancestral, Memórias vivas, Fazer quilombola and Raízes em cena. On the online festival, there were more than 200 logins to the platform and 663 views of the three livestreams in July.

The In-Person Festival was held from July 7 to 14 at the schools E.M.E.F. Professor Eurico Pinz, in Fraiburgo; Viver e Conhecer, Vilson Pedro Kleinubing, Ernesto Hachmann and Ivo Silveira, in Capinzal; E.E.B.M. Erci Dick in Monte Carlo; and at CEJA – E.E.B. Henrique Rupp Júnior and in the Invernada dos Negros Remaining Quilombo Community in Campos Novos. The sessions had debates and the participation of representatives of the Santa Catarina quilombola communities, who were able to recognize themselves on screen through their own productions or get to know stories of other communities. In Santa Catarina there are 21 quilombola communities, in 16 municipalities, bringing together 4,595 people. 

Preceding the festival, the workshop O minuto que foi was held, taught by Cuban filmmaker Yasser Socarrás González over two weekends in the remaining quilombola communities Invernada dos Negros, in Campos Novos, and Campo dos Poli, in Fraiburgo. The workshop resulted in the shorts Luta e resistência, Nos batuques dos tambores: o sonho de muitos and A luta de um quilombola polinário, which can be watched on the festival website.

The programme also included three livestreams, an opening one on July 1, followed by the screening of the short Disque Quilombola (2012) and a conversation with Vanda Pinedo (MNU), Lu Kilombola and mediation by Sinclair Biazotti. The second, on July 15, mediated by Rafaell Marcelino, with the theme “Luta Quilombola na Mostra de Cinema Chica Pelega,” was a conversation with leaders of Invernada dos Negros and Campo dos Poli. The closing livestream, on July 28, featured Maria Helena Thomaz and Adriana Ferreira da Silva of the Afro-Brazilian Studies Center (NEAB/UDESC) and the screening of the short Pele Negra, Justiça Branca (2022). The entire programme of the 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival – quilombola edition was collectively produced by Pupilo TV, VMS Produções and the Quilombola Curatorial Committee, made up of leaders of the quilombola communities of Santa Catarina and of the Unified Black Movement/MNU who collaborated in the selection of the films. The Committee was formed by Alessandro Pereira, Bete Quilombola, Edson Camargo, Rafaell Marcelino, Rosani Fernandes and Vanda Pinedo.

The festival had cultural support from the Unified Black Movement/MNU, the Afro-Brazilian Studies Center – NEAB/UDESC, the Paulo Freire Association for Education and Popular Culture/APAFEC and was selected by the Elisabete Anderle Culture Support Award – 2022 Edition, carried out with funds from the Government of the State of Santa Catarina, through the Catarinense Culture Foundation.

The Chica Pelega Festival has taken place since 2021, focusing on films about the Contestado War in Santa Catarina and Paraná and events related to it. In previous editions, 21 film sessions were presented in 26 schools, reaching more than 2,500 viewers.
