Today, we present a little about the places where the 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival – quilombola edition will take place: the Invernada do Negros Remaining Quilombo Community and the Campo dos Poli Remaining Quilombo Community. To learn more about the formation and resistance of the quilombos, below is a brief overview of the places that will host the Festival.
The quilombos
The quilombos emerged during Brazilian colonization as a response to the violence practiced by the colonizers and, later, by their descendants, against the Black people who were brought by force to Brazil from Africa. The first records of this type of formation date from the 1570s. Currently, there are 3,524 quilombola communities mapped in Brazil. However, it is estimated that the total number may reach 5,000. In the State of Santa Catarina, there are 21 communities, located in 16 municipalities, with a total of 4,595 people and 1,350 families*. In the Meio-Oeste region of Santa Catarina there are two quilombola communities, Invernada dos Negros and Campo dos Poli, which span the municipalities of Abdon Batista, Campos Novos, Fraiburgo and Monte Carlo. The 3rd edition of the Festival will be distributed in person in the last three.

Invernada dos Negros Remaining Quilombo Community
Invernada dos Negros was the first quilombola community in the State to receive certification as a remaining quilombo, granted to the Community of Heirs of Invernada dos Negros on April 2, 2004, by the Palmares Cultural Foundation; it was also the first quilombola territory recognized, in 2008, by Incra in Santa Catarina. With 2,000 hectares in Abdon Batista and 6,000 hectares in Campos Novos, Invernada dos Negros has approximately 320 families living in its territory.
Campo dos Poli Remaining Quilombo Community
Campo dos Poli has more than 500 hectares of land; about 26 families are located in the municipalities of Fraiburgo and Monte Carlo. The community was certified by the Palmares Cultural Foundation as a remaining quilombo on February 12, 2007, but is still in the titling process with Incra.
In addition to the in-person sessions in the communities, the festival will also have its online version throughout the month of July, in order to further expand the dissemination and access to the films and, above all, to the quilombola culture of this region.
