The circuit screens films from the 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival for free and is carried out with funds from the Catarinense Cinema Award – SPECIAL PAULO GUSTAVO LAW EDITION/2023
With free film screenings, the Chica Pelega Cinema Circuit – quilombola edition arrives in the western region, bringing different views and perspectives of the populations that make up the caboclo of the Contestado region, as well as the quilombola resistances of Santa Catarina and other regions. According to Sinclair Biazotti, educational advisor and part of the circuit’s production, the films screened present reflections on the struggles of the ancestors and also contemporary ones for the right to territories, land and cultures.
“We bring stories of quilombos from Santa Catarina and from all over the country, including urban ones, that experience daily resistance and build their leading roles,” says Sinclair. The names of the festival and the circuit honor Chica Pelega, a caboclo leader and combatant in the Contestado War, which took place between 1912 and 1916, in Santa Catarina.
Features and shorts were selected by a quilombola committee and the MNU
The circuit has a programme of features and short films from Santa Catarina and other states, both fiction and documentary, divided into the curatorial axes Resistência SC, Quilombos no plural, Visões do mundo ancestral, Memórias vivas, Fazer quilombola and Raízes em cena. The curatorship, carried out by a quilombola committee and representatives of the Unified Black Movement (MNU), selected films about remaining quilombo territories, cultures, life stories, dance, childhood and resistances.
The Chica Pelega Cinema Circuit is carried out with funds from the Catarinense Cinema Award – Special Paulo Gustavo Law Edition/2023, Catarinense Culture Foundation (FCC), Government of the State of Santa Catarina, Ministry of Culture and Federal Government.
Six sessions in six western municipalities
On the route through the west, six evening sessions will be held in spaces accessible to the entire public in the cities of Caçador, Videira, Joaçaba, Concórdia, Chapecó and Irani. The entire programme is free. (Check dates, venues and times in each western city at the end of the text)
In addition to the evening sessions, which will be open to all interested people, during the mornings and afternoons, in each city, closed sessions for schools will take place, thus reaching more students and teachers throughout the region.
The arrival in the west comes on the heels of the Chica Pelega Cinema Circuit – quilombola edition passing through seven remaining quilombo communities on the coast and also in western Santa Catarina, which took place between May 8 and 15. The circuit was in the communities of Caldas do Cubatão (Santo Amaro da Imperatriz), Toca/Santa Cruz (Paulo Lopes), Morro do Fortunato and Aldeia (Garopaba), Ilhotinha (Capivari de Baixo), Morros da Queimada and Mocotó (Florianópolis) and Invernada dos Negros (Campos Novos).
Continuation of the 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival – quilombola edition
The entire programme presented by the circuit is part of the 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival – quilombola edition, held in 2023. Composed of online and in-person sessions, the Festival passed through Fraiburgo, Capinzal, Monte Carlo and Campos Novos, in seven schools and other spaces. In addition, two workshops were held in two communities, led by Cuban filmmaker Yasser Socarrás González, which resulted in the shorts “Luta e resistência”, “Nos batuques dos tambores: o sonho de muitos” and “A luta de um quilombola polinário”. The shorts produced in the territories will also be in the Cinema Circuit programme.
