The event, which plans an online and in-person festival for July, holds counterpart workshops in the remaining quilombola territories and is already starting its first activities

The Chica Pelega Festival is an event that has taken place since 2021, screening and disseminating films on themes of the Contestado War and events related to it. Since its first edition, there have already been 21 film sessions, 26 schools served and more than 2,500 viewers. For the third year of the festival, the event’s production is preparing an edition dedicated to quilombola culture — a subject with a scarcity of materials and marked by invisibility in the State.

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the quilombos that today are formed in the Contestado Region emerged, between the West and the Highlands of Santa Catarina: the Invernada dos Negros Remaining Quilombo Community and the Campo dos Poli Remaining Quilombola Community, which span the cities of Abdon Batista, Calmon, Campos Novos, Fraiburgo, Matos Costa and Monte Carlo. In the State of Santa Catarina, there are 21 communities, located in 16 municipalities, with a total of 4,595 residents and 1,350 families.

The Invernada dos Negros Community was the first quilombola community in the State to receive certification of recognition as a remaining quilombo, granted to the Community of Heirs of Invernada dos Negros on April 2, 2004, by the Palmares Cultural Foundation; it was also the first quilombola territory recognized, in 2008, by Incra in Santa Catarina. With 2,000 hectares in Abdon Batista and 6,000 hectares in Campos Novos, Invernada dos Negros has approximately 320 families living in its territory. The Campo dos Poli Quilombola Community has about 26 families located in the municipalities of Fraiburgo and Monte Carlo. The community was certified by the Palmares Cultural Foundation as a remaining quilombo on February 12, 2007, and is still in the demarcation process with INCRA.

It is by working in these two contexts that the production of the festival’s 3rd edition will take place in 2023. The entire programme is being produced by Pupilo TV and VMS Produções through the Quilombola Curatorial Committee, made up of community leaders and members of other quilombos in the State and of the Unified Black Movement/MNU, who are handling the organizational matters and the selection of the films that will be part of the festivals. The Committee is made up of Alessandro Pereira, Bete Quilombola, Edson Camargo, Jilson Carlos Souza, Rafael Marcelino, Rosane Ribeiro and Vanda Pinedo.

The 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival is already in production and will take place between May and July of this year in an edition dedicated to quilombola culture, with in-person sessions, an online festival and workshops.

This May, the production of the film workshops “O minuto que foi” began, led by Cuban filmmaker Yasser Socarrás González, whose objective is to exchange knowledge about audiovisual production and, as a result, to produce films that will be screened at the festival. The first part of the workshops took place on May 20 and 21 in Campos Novos and Fraiburgo and continues on the weekend of May 27 and 28 with the filming.

In July, the screening activities related to the event take place: the Online Festival, lasting one month – between July 1 and 31 on the Pupilo website, and the in-person festivals in Fraiburgo (July 7) and Campos Novos (July 21), where the two remaining Quilombo communities are located, and also in Monte Carlo (July 14), which brings together remnants of both communities.
