The history of Monte Carlo has roots in the Contestado War, which is why it is so important to talk about this subject and debate the formation of the people who inhabit the region that was contested more than 100 years ago. With this in mind, VMS Produções and Pupilo TV bring to Monte Carlo the 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival – quilombola edition. An opportunity to debate this subject through cinema.

On Wednesday, July 12, the second day of the In-Person Festival, the residents of Monte Carlo can attend, from 7:30 p.m. at the Auditorium of E.E.B.M. Erci Dick, the screening of the following short films: Sobreviventes do Taquaruçu (1985), Invernada dos Negros – fotografia e vídeo (2011) and Antonieta (2015).

The in-person festival begins on Friday (07/07), in Fraiburgo, from 7:30 p.m., at E.M.E.F. Professor Eurico Pinz, in the São Miguel neighborhood, where the shorts can be seen: Blackout (2016), NovoMundo (2020) and Disque Quilombola(2012).

Closing the programme, the Invernada dos Negros Remaining Quilombo Community, in Campos Novos, opens its doors for the screening of the short films Vãnh gõ tõ Laklãnõ (2022), Disque Quilombola (2012), A Sússia (2018) and Invernada dos negros – fotografia e vídeo (2011).

In May, as a counterpart, the film workshop O Minuto que foi took place, when Cuban filmmaker Yasser Socarrás González told his story and guided the quilombolas, who were thus able to make their own short films – which will be screened on all days of the in-person festival. The three films produced in the workshop are: A luta de um quilombola polinário (Campo dos Poli/ Fraiburgo), No batuque dos tambores: o sonho de muitos (Invernada dos Negros/Campos Novos) and Luta e resistência (Invernada dos Negros/Campos Novos).

In addition to the in-person Festival, a completely free online Festival also takes place during the month of July, with 28 films screening on the website https://chicapelega.com.br and three more livestreams where the theme can be broadened in conversations with residents of the quilombola territories.

After all the sessions, there will be conversations addressing the themes and particularities of the films screened. The 3rd Chica Pelega Film Festival was selected by the Elisabete Anderle Culture Support Award – 2022 Edition, carried out with funds from the Government of the State of Santa Catarina, through the Catarinense Culture Foundation.

Invernada dos negros 2011 cartaz 3ª mostra de cinema chica pelega ed quilombola 2023

Invernada dos negros – fotografia e vídeo (2011) Directed by Daniel Herrera, André Constantin
Synopsis: In southern Brazil, “invernada” means a time of winter, a place of shelter for the herds. Through popular language, the word came to name a rare episode of the country’s history of slavery: the Invernada dos Negros – a stronghold of Afro-descendants who keep alive the memory and struggle of the enslaved heirs of an old farm on the Santa Catarina plateau. Fragments of this striking history make up the photography and video project titled Invernada dos Negros, twice awarded under the National Prize for Afro-Brazilian Cultural Expressions of the Palmares Foundation (2010-2012). The project has generated exhibitions and educational actions across Brazilian regions and cities but has never been shown on television. The proposal is to revisit the images and sounds of the characters and places of Invernada dos Negros in a documentary for television. At the center of the narrative is the ritualization of the photographic image of the Invernada’s characters, with the memories of the place as crossed and underlying storylines.

Luta e resistência – Invernada dos negros (2023)
Synopsis: Living in the quilombola community Invernada dos Negros demands much struggle and resistance, especially to realize its residents’ dreams. Dreams long idealized, dreams their ancestors had and could not fulfill. Over time, new quilombola families formed and arrived in the community, bringing with them the desire to plant, produce and build their homes, to show that with struggle and much resilience it is possible to achieve the goals they set.

Nos batuques dos tambores: o sonho de muitos (2023)
Synopsis: We are the continuation of our ancestors’ history and the hope of our children. Life gradually teaches us a fundamental truth: dreams, struggle and resistance are what will lead us to the end of the road successfully. The “griots” (read griôs) are considered living libraries of all stories. Stories that are passed from one generation to another through “oral tradition,” that is, through speech and orality, and not through writing. Thus, the griôs keep and pass on memories, dreams and teachings that unite elders, adults and children, connecting past, present and future. The African griôs tell, sing, play musical instruments and dramatize the stories they narrate. That is why they are also considered complete artists.
