The first stop of the Chica Pelega Cinema Circuit is on Wednesday, May 8, in the Caldas de Cubatão Remaining Quilombo Community, in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz/SC. The session takes place at 7 p.m. at the Frei Hugolino Parish Hall.
A bit of the history of Caldas do Cubatão:
According to accounts from community members to the Palmares Cultural Foundation, their ancestors were enslaved Africans (among them Marco Manoel Vieira, Ignácio Antonio da Silva, Francisco Maximiano, Miguel de Souza, Francisco Tolentino Lemos), brought to cultivate their masters’ lands and some of them especially to build the thermal spa in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, since the thermal waters were discovered in the early 19th century.
The children of these individuals were born in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Águas Mornas, Anitápolis and São José, and were registered in Palhoça and Santo Amaro da Imperatriz. As a means of livelihood, they worked in the fields, in charcoal burning, in making straw crafts, as domestic workers and as washerwomen. They grew corn, sugarcane, coffee and cassava, using mills and stills belonging to others. Due to survival difficulties, some families dispersed to other cities and their lands were occupied by squatters.
Today the community joins forces and fights tirelessly for the demarcation of the lands belonging to their ancestors and, definitively, for their titling. A great source of pride, quilombola education is already a reality in the community, despite the many difficulties faced since its implementation.
The community is certified by presidential decree number 4887/2003 and Palmares Cultural Foundation ordinance number 98/2007.
